Dering Hall’s first webinar of 2019, The Top 10 Design Events in 2019, was on Thursday, January 24. In this webinar, we discussed some of the top design events of the next 12 months with industry veterans Dennis Sarlo, Executive Editor at Dering Hall, and Kendra Frisbie, President of DECASO – who have experienced them all. They shared some tips, tricks, and key benefits for attending each event, so you can begin marking your calendars in preparation. Whether you’re a design brand or a professional, this rundown is invaluable as you plan for the year ahead.

Modernism Week

  • Great place the discover the heart of mid-century design

  • Highly recommended to explore the surrounding area

  • This event sells out early, and many of the tours are currently sold out. Book your tickets here

  • Be sure to pack your schedule and absorb all there is to do

  • It’s a small town, so book your dinner reservations and hotels early

Architectural Digest Design Show  

  • Great mix of different types of people

  • Huge brands, small artisans, K&B brands – many different sections to check out

  • Check out the MADE area featuring 70+ new makers this year

  • Check out DIFFA dining for design area

  • The event takes place on the piers, so plan on taking a cab to and from the show

High Point Market

  • Check out Dering Hall’s High Point webinar in February

  • HPMKT is massive show, runs for quite a few days (plan to spend at least 3 days)

  • They are very well organized so be sure to plan early (NOW)

  • The city (High Point, NC) is dedicated to design

  • Be sure to check out the HPMKT app – fantastic app to plan and map out your visits

  • They have trolley system in place to get you around the different locations

  • Wear comfortable shoes

  • Spring market is a bit smaller than fall market

  • Stay tuned to social media for the buzz leading up to the event

  • There is a lot to do outside the market so be sure to plan accordingly

Salone del Mobile

  • This is the show that launches new exciting brands in the contemporary space

  • There are many popups and things going on outside of the show

  • Buzz is immediate on social media

  • Great way to help navigate what’s happening in Milan

  • Book early and try Airbnb if possible

  • One of the most fun shows out there

LCDQ

  • Windows will be designed around icons (theme)

  • Very social, great way to walk around and see what people are doing in LA

  • Great mix of people and great for networking

  • A lot of it is outdoors so you can enjoy the great weather during this time of year in LA

  • There’s something every hour to do

  • Excellent panelists and speakers

  • Worth spending an extra few days to check out the area

ICFF

  • This is a must-do / must-see event

  • Great place to do business

  • Very accessible to the rest of the city

  • Check out student section – students will be displaying their work and this is a fun place to interact with future designers

  • Great way to see smaller brands

Decorex

  • Moved to Kensington this year – much easier to get around

  • Big show but not overwhelming

  • Interesting brands, beautiful artistic work to enjoy

  • Can do the entire show in 2-3 days

Design Leadership Summit

  • Outstanding behind-the-scenes tours

  • Great membership-based community

  • Each location is chosen to allow attendees to absorb the beauty and personality of the city

  • Spectacular content for those who attend

  • Designers show up to network and engage and are really open to sharing ideas during this event

Maison&Objet

  • The September show is slightly smaller than Jan show (just wrapped up)

  • Great place to experience new launches

  • The September show coincides with Paris Design Week

  • The September show tends to incorporate fashion and food with design

  • The Paris weather is great in September
