Master Class: All About Fabric
Dering Hall’s February Master Class: All About Fabric took place Tuesday, February 5. Scott Kravet, Chief Creative Director of Kravet Inc., joined Dering Hall to present a special informative session for designers.
The Masterclass, which can be viewed here, covered the following topics:
Inspiration From Around the World
Scott details his global travels to discover new textiles and mills. He shares some stories of his visits to Laos and Tanzania and discusses the origins of some of the pieces in the Kravet archives.
How It’s Made
Scott discusses the three techniques of fabric creation: hand-blocking, velvet embossing, and indigo dying.
From Past to Present: Archival Inspiration
Scott takes us through some of the Kravet archives from around the world and shares an entertaining story about a visit to France to purchase some pieces from an old mill. He also explains that “a good design is a good design” and it just needs to be recreated and reimagined. Important to know: When it comes to textile archives, you have to change the physical fabric in three different areas: scale, style, and color.
Eagle Eye: Market Trends
One of the most important elements of fabric selection is performance. Scott goes into detail on performance fabrics topics including stain-resistance, crypton, KravetArmor, microseal, durability, double rubs, and the Wyzenbeek test. He also talks about drawing inspiration from the fashion runway and integrating art into a number of their fabrics.
Partner Point of View: Licensed Designers
Scott talks about some design relationships and highlights some licensed collections in partnership with Barbara Barry, Linherr Hollingsworth and Kelly Wearstler.
