[VIDEO] Master Class - All About Lighting

In November, Dering Hall launched its first Master Class, All About Lighting, featuring Kellee Hollenback Hammond, VP of Sales at Hudson Valley Lighting. Kellee has been with HVL for 10 years and has been in the lighting industry for 18 years. She is also in charge of all visual merchandising for HVL’s Dallas and High Point markets, traveling across the country to work with independent sales reps, designers, and showrooms. In this Master Class, she shares her in-depth knowledge of designer lighting including the basics of lighting, sizing guidelines, bulb types, and how to plan accordingly for each project.

The Master Class, which can be viewed above, covered the following topics:

  1. The three essential lighting types:

  • Ambient Lighting – serves as the base layer in a thoughtful lighting layout (also called overall or general lighting). Chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts & semi-flush mounts can be used as the primary lighting source, as well as an artistic centerpiece. Pro tip: Multiply the rooms sq. footage by 1.5 to determine the minimum number of watts needed from an incandescent bulb to illuminate a room.

  • Task Lighting – lighting sources dedicated to a specific task. Determine where you need stronger lighting – what will you be doing in the room? Kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and game rooms all have different lighting requirements. Pro tip: Multiply the sq. footage of the task area and multiply that by 2.5 to determine the number of watts needed to illuminate that area.

  • Accent Lighting – highlights the aesthetic features in a room. Use it draw attention to interesting textures, architecture or works of art. Pro tip: The accent lighting should be three times brighter than the surrounding areas.

2. Sizing Guidelines for chandeliers, wall sconces, pendants, flush mounts, and bath + vanity.

3. The basics of bulbs including:

  • The differences between warm and cold temperatures in lighting and how to choose the right temperature for your projects.

  • Descriptions of various bulb types including incandescent, halogen incandescent, xenon incandescent, fluorescent, carbon filament and LED (light emitting diode).

  • Power consumption and measurement of light (Lumens vs. Watts)
